Do You have Foam in Your Pool?
Spring has arrived in Lakeland, which means more time spent lounging and playing in the pool. But maybe you’ve noticed a foam coating on the surface of your pool. It’s disconcerting to see the water covered with a white frothy blanket. Do you have foam in your pool? Don’t worry, it’s not a permanent problem. So, with that in mind, let’s address how to get foam out of your pool.
What Causes Foam in a Pool?
There are several culprits of foam in a pool, and let’s start with the most common.
Too Many People Using the Pool
People who swim in your pool bring a host of chemicals like deodorant, soap, shampoo, sunscreen, perfume, bug repellant, and other items. When these chemicals get into your pool and are mixed, the churning motion of people swimming will cause it to foam up. A good way to prevent this is to rinse off before entering your pool.
The Algaecide You’re Using Isn’t Right
It’s understandable and commendable that you don’t want algae turning your pool an emerald green. So, you use an algaecide to keep the organisms from growing in your pool. The issue with algaecide is you get what you pay for. A cheap algaecide will produce foam in your pool. If you want to prevent an algaecide from producing foam, use one that has 30% to 60% polymer content and is either gold, silver, or copper-based.
Your Pool System Has a Leak
Another cause of foam in your pool that is not chemical or biological is your pool’s pump system. Often, a leak in the pool system will produce enough bubbles that foam will appear on the water’s surface. If your pool’s skimmer isn’t at least 50% submerged, the pump will take in more air and push back out into the pool. If your skimmer is 50% submerged and there is still an issue with foam in your pool, then there could be a leak somewhere in your pool’s system. You need a professional pool service company to examine it and ensure no leaks are present. If they do find a leak, they will know how to remedy the situation.
Your Pool’s Dissolved Solids Are High
Another common issue with pools is the dissolved solids’ level is too high. Minerals such as magnesium, calcium, sodium, copper, pesticides, and herbicides can all cause foam in your pool. The solution to this problem is simple. Backwash your pool, lower the water level, and then refill it. Make sure that the pH levels are acceptable before swimming.
