Is It Time to Resurface Your Swimming Pool?

A well-built swimming pool will give you many years of enjoyment. But at one point, even the best pools will begin to show the signs of aging. Where the structural surface of your pool is concerned, you may notice signs that indicate that it’s time to look into a resurfacing project. Pool Works Pools & Spas of Auburndale, FL, would like to share a little about how to inspect your pool’s surface and the benefits of having the pool resurfaced when this work is necessary.

Flaking plaster

Watch for plaster decomposition on the walls, floor and steps of your pool. Plaster can flake for a variety of reasons – old age, poor-quality material, etc. – but no matter the cause, the pool will need partial or complete resurfacing to keep this problem from worsening.

Cracks in the pool surface

It’s common to see a few minor surface cracks as your pool ages. But if you see a lot of them, and if you’re spending a lot of time and money having the cracks repaired, pool resurfacing is probably your best permanent solution.

Surface stains

Many common pool surface stains are caused by debris or algae and can be removed with relative ease. Erosion marks are also fairly common occurrences as a pool ages. Stains that are impossible to remove usually point to a problem with the pool surface itself and should be inspected.

Discoloration

Along with stains, watch for areas of discoloration on your pool’s surface. Plaster discoloration often begins on the steps. Have a pool pro look at the situation and discuss your options, which may include resurfacing.

Leaks

If your pool is losing water and needs filling more than you think it should, there may be a leak or leaks somewhere within the surface. Test by adding a mixture of water and food coloring and pouring it near the area where you think the leak may exist. The colored water will move toward the leak.

Fiberglass overlay

You may notice that your pool’s fiberglass overlay is beginning to delaminate or that the water is cloudy as a result of chalking. In itself, this may not be a reason to immediately have your pool resurfaced, but look into repairs, and when you do resurface, use a different type of fiberglass.

Pool inspections

It’s a good idea to schedule annual pool inspections to go along with your normal maintenance and upkeep activities. Experienced pool technicians can spot early signs of problems and advise you on the best way to handle whatever issues they find. Most inspectors also perform repairs, equipment replacements and resurfacing work.

Why have your pool resurfaced?

  • Reduce the chance of injury to swimmers
  • Save money on water by keeping it in the pool where it belongs
  • Make the water cleaner and more inviting
  • Restore the pool’s original beauty and luster
  • Save time and money by not having to do recurring “patchwork” jobs
