Maximize Chlorine Efficiency in Your Pool
Keeping your pool clean and sanitized is so important, and there are a few different ways to approach it. Chlorine is one of the most popular chemicals for pool sanitization. It kills dangerous microorganisms quickly and makes your pool safe to swim in. If you’re using chlorine regularly in your pool, it’s important to take steps to help it work as efficiently as possible. By maximizing the efficiency of your chlorine, you can cut down on the amount of sanitizer you’re using while still keeping your pool safe to swim in. Here are some of the best ways to help your chlorine work more efficiently.
Balance Your Water’s pH Levels
The pH levels in your water can affect the way chlorine works in your water. Chlorine works best when it’s in a pH level that ranges from 7.4 to 7.6. When the pH level is too low, the chlorine dissipates more quickly, so you’ll need to replenish it more often. When the pH level gets too high, it essentially renders the chlorine inactive, so it won’t sanitize your pool.
Protect Your Chlorine From the Sun
When chlorine is exposed to the sun, it starts to break down very quickly. When this happens, you’ll need to add chlorine much more frequently. Outdoor pools are particularly susceptible to this issue.
One of the easiest ways to protect chlorine from the sun is with a solar pool cover. This cover goes over the pool whenever you’re not using it and blocks the sun’s rays. Solar covers have other benefits as well – they prevent water from evaporating during the day and help keep the pool warm for a longer period of time. Additionally, these solar covers can help prevent leaves and other debris from falling into the pool.
Chlorine stabilizer is usually made with cyuranic acid, or CYA. CYA prevents chlorine from breaking down when exposed to the sun. You should monitor your pool regularly to make sure you have the appropriate level of CYA in it. For most pools, the ideal level of CYA is between 30 and 55 ppm. Avoid adding too much CYA, however, as this can backfire and make the chlorine less effective.
Use An In-Depth Pool Cleaning Routine
When dirt and debris starts to build up in your pool, it uses excess free chlorine very quickly. Developing an effective weekly cleaning routine helps keep your chlorine working efficiently. This means brushing and skimming the pool as well as regularly cleaning the pool filter. You can also use an oxidizer on a weekly basis to prevent buildup. By preventing buildup from getting out of control, you’re helping your chlorine work more efficiently.
