How To Safely Use Chlorine Tablets
There are many advantages to owning a pool. Great fun with your family and friends and endless summers cooling off in the pool. There are also some added responsibilities to be sure that you and your family stay safe.
You may ask yourself, “What is chlorine and how do I use it safely?” Well, chlorine is a chemical that you add to your pool to keep it clean from bacteria. It also helps to keep your pool crystal clear. Your next question may be, “What is the best way to add chlorine to my pool?” For that question, there are many options, which we will sort out below.
Chlorine Usage Options
In-line chlorinator
Your best option would be to install an in-line chlorinator, also known as an automatic chlorine feeder. By adding the chlorine to the chlorinator, water flows through the chlorinator while dispensing chlorine at safe levels into the water. Another added benefit of this option is that you can leave for the weekend and not worry if you come home to an algae-filled pool.
Floater
A floater is a small basket that you fill with chlorine tablets and bobs up and down in the pool. The floater distributes chlorine as it moves. A floater or floating chlorine dispenser is a great way to add chlorine to your pool. Depending on your pool size, you will add different amounts of chlorine to the floater.
Skimming Basket
It is not advisable to put choline tablets directly into your skimmer basket, yet it is an option. If you put chlorine in the skimming basket, it is very close to your pool equipment which can be damaging. Be advised, that high concentrations of chlorine can damage your heater, pump, and filter.
How Much Chlorine To Use?
Knowing how much chlorine to use is important as well. Chorine tablets come in 3-inch discs that you can buy from your pool store. Depending on the size of your pool will determine how much chlorine to use. Here is an idea as to how much chlorine to use:
- 2,500 – 5,000-gallon pools, 1 chlorine tablet per week
- 7,000–gallon pool, 1-2 chlorine tablets per week
- 10,000-gallon pool, 2 chlorine tablets per week
- 13,500-gallon pool, 2-3 chlorine tablets per week
- 15,000 – 17,000-gallon pools, 3 chlorine tablets per week
This is only a brief introduction to chlorine use. With proper knowledge, and advice from your pool professional, you will enjoy a summer of fun with your bacteria-free pool. Please reach out to your local pool professional for further help.
